GIRL POWER U.P.
This program was started in 2011 with funding from the Children's Trust Fund of Michigan. It is supported by the West Marquette County Health Foundation, United Way of Marquette County, Rotary West, Kiwanis of Marquette, Kiwanis of Ishpeming, Frazier Foundation, Upper Peninsula Community Foundations. Over 500 girls have participated in the program since it's inception.
Yoga and Girl Power
A new component to the program this year has been yoga. The sessions, taught by Certified Instructor, Connie Kontio, are at each school. Studies have shown that students who received yoga instruction have an increased emotional balance in the long term and showed reductions in fear, feelings of helplessness, and aggression. Also students who received yoga instruction transferred what they had learned to situations outside of school to improve their well-being and to control negative feelings. Comments from the girls include: "I feel calmer", "I'm more focused", "It makes me feel better".
Girl Power U.P. is a program of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Marquette and Alger Counties, Inc.
