School-Based Mentoring Program

EMPOWERING YOUTH THROUGH PEER MENTORSHIP

The School-Based Mentoring Program at Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Central Upper Peninsula pairs high school mentors (Bigs) with elementary/middle school students (Littles) to foster guidance, connection, and leadership development in a structured, classroom-based setting. BBBS provides an evidence-informed, inclusive mentorship experience that builds confidence, resilience, and future success for both Bigs & Littles.

HOW IT WORKS

SCHOOL-BASED MENTORING

→ Trained high school students mentor younger students in a structured school setting using evidence-based practices.

→Provides a trusted role model to help navigate academic and social challenges.

→ Together, they meet weekly for the entire academic school year. Each week is designed to build leadership, social emotional skills, mental well-being, healthy relationships, and explore academic aspirations.

BUILDING LEADERSHIP & LIFE SKILLS

→ High School Bigs gain leadership experience and develop skills in communication, teamwork, and responsibility.

→ Participants in the school-based program gain confidence in their academic potential, strengthen peer connections, and develop emotional resilience, all while reducing engagement in high-risk behaviors.

INTERACTIVE, ENGAGING ACTIVITES

→ Sessions focus on goal-setting, character development, career exploration, and fun team-building activities.

→ Encourage positive decision-making and social-emaotional learning.

ACADEMIC & PERSONAL GROWTH

→ Mentored students show higher school engagement, better attendance, and improved relationships.

→ High school mentors gain volunteer experience, college &  career readiness skills, and service hours.

SAFE & SUPPORTIVE ENVIRONMENT

→ Takes place during school, ensuring easy access for students.

→ Led by trained program staff, mentors, and school partners.
