Now Accepting Lunch Buddy Volunteers
Lunch Buddies is a program that matches an elementary student with a caring volunteer Lunch Buddy. Lunch Buddies meets weekly at the students school, during the child's lunch & recess time, normally on a Thursday or a Friday during the academic school year.
Lunch Buddies is a great way to give back to your local community if you're a college student or have a demanding work schedule. A Big Brothers Big Sisters staff member will always be on hand & will plan possibly activities for you and your Lunch Buddy to do; otherwise, you can talk, do homework, play games, to arts & crafts, or just hang out and talk.
If you're interested in getting involved, apply by clicking here!
If you have any questions about the program, feel free to email Laura at Laura@bbbsmqt.org or call 475-7801.
Burt & Brandon
Matched since May 2009
Burt and Brandon were matched in May of 2009. Burt and his son Scott had volunteered their boats for the Big Brothers Big Sister’s fishing tournament the previous year, and had such a good time they decided to become Big Brothers themselves. Brandon’s mom Susan was looking for someone to make a long term commitment to her son.
When she was told about Burt she thought it was the ideal situation. On their first outing, Burt took Brandon out fishing on the boat, and Brandon was hooked on fishing ever since. Burt also brings Brandon hunting every year, where he gets to hunt with another Big Brother/Little Brother match. While they do many other things, fishing and hunting continues to be their favorite pastime.
Susie is grateful for the time that Burt has spent with Brandon saying, “this is more than I expected, and never dreamed that it would be this good. These are probably some the best people in the world”. Burt, along with the South Shore fishing group continue to put on an annual fishing tournament for Big Brothers Big Sisters. In 2009, Brandon took first place with a 26 pound fish.
They also give back to the community by doing the beach clean up almost every year. Burt goes down to Florida every winter now, but continues to keep in contact with Brandon while he is gone. When he returns in the Spring, just in time for the ice to melt, they pick right back up where they left off, and hit the lakes for more fishing. Brandon’s grandma commented, “Burt is the best thing that has ever happened to Brandon, they really needed a strong male role model for the family and they got it.”
Congratulations to Burt and Brandon on being matched for 5 years!
