Sharing With Insulin-using

Mentors For Kids with Diabetes
Do you have a child with diabetes who could use a little extra help or
guidance (from someone other than you)? Maybe you are an older youth or adult
with type 1 diabetes who would be willing to spend 4-6 hours a month with a
child or young teen who also has diabetes. If either of these apply to you or
someone you know, consider calling Big Brothers Big Sisters of Marquette and
Alger County to get involved in a new program called SWIM, Sharing with
Insulin-Using Mentors.
Together with the U.P. Diabetes Outreach Network, Bell Hospital and Marquette
General Health System, Big Brothers Big Sisters is diving into SWIM. SWIM is a
new, unique project designed to provide help and support to youth with type 1
diabetes. Kids and adults with type 1 diabetes never get a break from their
disease. As one child puts it, "I'd rather be bitten by a snake than have
diabetes." Learning how to manage diabetes today with the assistance of
educators and mentors can help prevent serious and disabling complications later
in life. Big Brothers Big Sisters does many things to join youth with mentors.
SWIM is now one more way to help. Older youth and adults who volunteer to be Big
Brothers Big Sisters say that they get as much from the program as the kids.
Start SWIMming today. Call Big Brothers Big Sisters in
Marquette County at (906)475-7801
or (906)387-1711 in Alger County for an application or
fill out the application online.
