BIG THINGS WE ARE LOOKING FOR

Being a Big is about unlocking the potential and promise of our youth, and the power to do so starts with the right values.

The children and teens we serve are looking for mentors who embody kindness, honesty, energy, integrity, and above all else, a commitment to their community.

It is
OUR job to be on their team, help them recognize their worth, and explore the interests that inspire their journey towards a fulfilling future.

Sometimes being a GREAT Big simply means being a good listener and creating space for your Little to shine. Sometimes it means discussing tough topics, and sometimes, it's just about having fun.

Are you ...?

  • Humble, self-aware, empathetic, and willing to learn from your Little
  • A good listener
  • Interested in helping a young person discover their greatness
  • Committed to increasing equity and access for the youth we serve
  • Passionate about unlocking ASSETS/STRENGTHS in another person
  • Someone who respects and learns from the lived experiences of those around you
  • Willing to be yourself and ENCOURAGE a young person to do the same
  • Open to helping a young person determine what THEIR version of success may be
  • Someone who owns up to their mistakes and learns from them
  • A product of a great mentor or understanding of your own privilege
  • Accountable and consistent
  • Supportive of disadvantaged communities and future generations

Understanding your BIG commitment:

  • Commit to 12 months as a mentor
  • Meet with your Little 2-4 times each month (At least 4 hours each month)
  • Coordinate with your Little's Parent/Guardian
  • Embrace a strengths-based approach and work with your Little to achieve gains in the areas identified in their plan
  • Commit to having a conversation with BBBSCUP staff once per month

How to start making a BIG difference:

  • Complete an application & Review the orientation
  • Schedule a 60-90 minute in-person interview (typically at your home)
  • Background checks, reference checks, etc.
  • Complete self-paced online pre-match training
  • Receive information about your proposed Little via phone
  • Attend your match meeting!

SO ... what exactly does a BIG do?

Bigs show up.

Littles deserve a consistent, enduring relationship. To build that relationship, Bigs commit to a minimum of 12 months, 4-6 hours a month. Although it’s not required, many Bigs and Littles stay together far past that first year; sometimes a lifetime.

Bigs mentor.

It’s natural to feel a bit intimidated by the word mentor. But a mentor is simply someone who listens, encourages, and points out possibilities. Bigs aren’t responsible for solving problems; they’re only responsible for caring about the challenges Littles encounter.

Bigs have so much fun!

Bigs and Littles hang out and talk, run errands together, go to the park, catch a game or a movie, grab a meal or make one, head to the library... you know: regular stuff kids and teens like to do. Honestly, the what isn’t the point. The point is the who. Could that be you?

Bigs receive support and coaching.

Bigs are part of a team of caring and important adults in a young person’s life. You’ll have the support of the Little’s parent/guardian and teachers and, of course, our professional program staff, who are always readily available!
